This post might be a short one. Just a heads up. So, you’re either thinking: “yaaay! I’ll read this quickly then and be on my way” or “man! Why????? I always looove her posts”. I sure hope you’re of the latter category – or I’ll have to reach through this computer and…and…I don’t have a closing statement. Sigh.
Just do you. 🙂
My point with this post though is, well, to do what I do best: muse. Think out loud. Two lines of a song have been in my heart and mind for give or take two months. Insane. I cannot seem to get over them. I’m going to try here to figure out why I can’t shake it. But first, the lines:
“You don’t give your heart in pieces
You don’t hide Yourself to tease us…”
Let me say right off the bat that I wish I was that great a songwriter! Phew. I mean, take a look for yourself at the lyrics in their entirety. From the day I heard the song for the first time, I couldn’t get past the two lines I’ve pasted above. They made me think a number of things. Well, two mainly. One, that the writer knows a thing or two about heartbreak, bless her heart (I think Amanda Cook is the person behind that song). To further explain, I understood that the songwriter knew about the fragility of human love, and the inconsistency of it, possibly from first-hand experience. Who knows? Secondly, I thought that the writer had likely truly encountered the love of God in a way that I definitely still haven’t. I have yearned to comprehend it, the kinda love that the Bible actually says is incomprehensible. He is the only One who can reveal His love to me, I guess. In any case, I found that I envied the writer (in a good way), and so I sought to experience God’s love as much as possible through the lyrics.
And, here I am two months later, with those two lines still strumming across my heart. I think I love them because they speak to the essence of who God is. He gives Himself FULLY, completely, entirely. He shows His hand. Love is honest, truthful, out there. Nothing to hide. For those of you who are in meaningful relationships (and/or married), think of what attracted you to your current partner. Would you have felt as safe in the relationship if your partner was those song lines reversed? In other words, if your partner gave his/her heart in pieces, played games with you, hiding and revealing themselves to tease you? No! You wouldn’t. You either wouldn’t remain with such a person, or you would but would continually feel unsure of you guys’ future. So that’s it. We’re drawn to security in love.
Truth is though, the more I think of it, even our best selves or that of our partners can fail in those two areas. We each can and definitely do give our hearts in pieces. Why? Because by nature, we are fractured. No human being is entirely whole and is his/her completely best self. We’re just doing the best we can. That’s probably why I froze. I realized that my partner can fail me or I him. But…that there is One, and only One, who is entirely true, entirely faithful, entirely loving.
I don’t know Him near enough. I hunger for a fuller experience of that kind of otherworldly love. Don’t you? Wouldn’t you?
I leave you with a few more lines from that song. Just think:
“Your love’s not fractured
It’s not a troubled mind
It isn’t anxious
It’s not the restless kind…”
Perhaps those will haunt you for the next two months eh?
If so, maybe not quite a bad thing. 😉

We will never love as Our Creator does.
Try as we may, it is impossible.
Even the most loving heart falls short.
But, we are still capable of loving deeply.
When we give up self, look to helping others be all they can be, that is love.
Whether it be your spouse or friend.
This is great, Christine! And you are so right. We are made in His image, and so are capable indeed of truly loving – to the best of our abilities. Let’s take on the love challenge!
I love your posts I’ve just been working so many hours. Now, talking about LOVE!! I think about it everyday. And unfortunately I have experienced the worst kind of love, what I thought was love, so for me I have always known God can only love me the way I need to be loved or how God wants me to be loved. It’s so sad how the world does not love as they should. It’s all God expects from us, is to love as HE loves. Then there would be peace and we would all be happy but, instead people crave things that don’t have anything to do with love, just self gratification, a new identity whatever it takes for them. And they are still not happy, what the hey!!! For me, it’s easy to Love and Worship my God, be thankful and grateful for all He has done for me and all He will do but, to love others with that “it’s all about me” attitude is hard, no matter what you do for them they are never happy. I find this in the work place serving the rich. Nag, nag, nag!! It’s hard to stay up beat when they are doing their best to be a downer which brings me down. How can anyone complain when there is so much hurt and suffering in the world. And how do you talk to someone like that without saying “how dare you” only think of yourself with out a care, shame on you. You don’t deserve anything it’s all for God not for us. I just want to scream. So, I hang out with Christians and go to church, stay involved in church and there I find Happiness, Peace and the Best Love ever from my Christian friends and sisters. Then I can go back into the world for another week until the next Sunday!!
I appreciated reading this, Nancy. Thank you for taking the time. It’s very true that our world has no idea what the real kinda love is, and we keep only catching glimpses of the real deal. It’s time to dive in and see what all we’re missing. 🙂
Thanks so much, and grace to you re: your work environment.
